The emotions they can play an important role in the way you think and behave.

The emotions you feel every day can compel you to act and influence the decisions you make about your life, both big and small.

Emotions can be short-lived, like a flash of annoyance with a co-worker, or long-lasting, like dealing with sadness over the loss of a relationship. But, Why exactly do we experience emotions? What function do they fulfill?

Where do emotions come from?

Emotions are influenced by a network of interconnected structures in the brain that make up what is known as the limbic system. Key structures, including the hypothalamus, el hippocampus, amygdala and limbic Cortex, play a key role in emotions and behavioral responses.

The three components of emotion

To truly understand emotions, it is important to understand the three critical components of an emotion. Each element can play a role in the function and purpose of your emotional responses.

  • Subjective component: how you experience the emotion
  • Physiological component: how your body reacts to emotion
  • Expressive component: how you behave in response to emotion

While we are all wired differently, our emotions and the ways we feel and react make us unique. They allow us to assess what is important in our lives, from the people we care about to the opinions we hold. They can also give us insight into the patterns that stem from our childhood experiences.

As human beings, we have the ability to self-regulate or manage our thoughts, behaviors and emotions, which allows us to better manage the Stress, deal with conflicts and achieve our goals. We can further develop our self-regulation skills through mindfulness strategies and exercises.
