After recruiting volunteers in their 60s and 70s with healthy brains that showed no signs of cognitive decline, the researchers randomly placed them into three groups. One group walked, another stretched and did balance exercises, and the last group learned country dance. The choreography of the dance became progressively more challenging over time.

All performed the assigned activity for one hour a day, three times a week. After a period of six months, the volunteers' brains were rescanned and compared to when they had started their regimens.

In another recent study, conducted in Brazil, dancing in sync with others allowed people to feel closer to each other and fostered friendship. It also increased pain tolerance.

When you sync up with the people next to you in a Zumba class or flash mob, you're doing a form of collective dance set to music. This is great for feelings of closeness with others.

In the research study, when participants danced, happy chemicals called endorphins were released. Endorphins are integral to human bonding processes. Therefore, they, and we, feel closer to others with whom we are dancing.

In this particular study, the researchers wanted to see the effect of endorphins on pain. Pain was measured by constant inflation of a blood pressure cuff on the subjects' non-dominant arms. Study participants were asked to indicate when the pressure became uncomfortable while dancing.

The research results showed that those who moved more energetically and in sync bonded with others and also had a higher pain threshold.
